44 Years And Still Going Strong!

Today, my parents are celebrating their 44th Wedding Anniversary. Please join me in wishing them a Happy Anniversary! I'm so proud of my parents and the example they have set for me and my sister. Never in my life - not once, not even for a moment - have I doubted that my parents are in love and will be together for the rest of their lives.

That's such a rare partnership in today's society, and one worthy of celebration.

A Case Of The Blues...

Don't be worried about me, I'm not sad! Ha! It just occurred to me, that during a 3-day stretch over the holidays - I somehow managed to wear the exact same "color scheme" every day! When did I realize this? Umm, well, I'm a little behind around here (you could say that...) and just got around to loading all my pictures from the holidays to my computer.

We Are The Champions, Again!

Unless you've been hiding under a rock (or heavily medicated) for the past 24 hours, you have surely heard that the college football BCS national championship game was played last night in New Orleans. My Alabama boys beat our bitter SEC-rival LSU in convincing fashion 21-0. Never in the history of the BCS has the losing team scored "0" points - in any BCS bowl, not just the championship.

This was a huge victory for the Alabama program, one we'll be celebrating until football season begins next summer. I'm already looking forward to the Alabama season opener - it will be played in the "new" Dallas Cowboys Stadium, vs. Michigan. Now THAT is going to be huge - and I plan to be there!

Proud of my Alabama quarterback, A.J. McCarron. He is from my hometown of Mobile, and comes from a great family. A class act with a bright future!

Also proud of fellow Gulf Coast native, Trent Richardson. Trent hails from Pensacola (where I now work every day). While playing high school football in Pensacola, Trent broke all of Emmitt Smith's records. For those who don't know their football, Emmitt went on to become a star running back at The University of Florida, and a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Dallas Cowboys.

To my fellow Bama fans, enjoy this victory! It's extra sweet! Roll Tide!

Gettin' My Tail Kicked...

Hi Everyone! So sorry for my lack of posts the past two days. To say I'm totally exhausted would be a major understatement. My new schedule is absolutely kicking my tail. I'm not used to getting up at 5AM, leaving the house at 6:30-6:45AM, and getting home at 5:30PM (if I'm lucky, on gym nights it's like 7-7:15PM).

I'm having to learn so much "new stuff" at my job, I won't bore you with all that. My brain is totally fried and I'm beyond the point of exhaustion.

I'll be back in a few days. When I return, I have some giveaway winners to announce, a new giveaway to post, some wonderful new recipes (hello, Crock Pot!) for y'all, Christmas loot, Lilly Pulitzer sale success (and failure!). Hope you'll hang with me!

New Years Resolutions

Are you a New Years Resolutions-kind-of-person? Or do you believe that resolutions, while filled with good plans and intentions, are a waste of time? I straddle the fence on this issue, because for the most part my resolutions are the same every year! However, it doesn't stop me from making a list of what I'd like to accomplish in the New Year. Without further ado, my list for 2012.

1) Lose weight. Finally (and I do mean finally) I need to lose the weight that is, literally, weighing me down. I have struggled with my weight since junior high school. As I've gotten older (and hopefully, wiser) I have started to see this struggle is physical, yes - but emotional too. Let's face it - eating is enjoyable. Good food is everywhere, and it can be difficult to make healthy choices. I live in the South - life and gatherings are centered around food. This year, I will try to remember that "food is fuel" and treat my body a little better. If I can lose (1) pound every week, I'll be at my goal weight before the end of 2012. My goal is to lose (50) total pounds in 2012.

2) Exercise consistently. I made big strides in this area during 2011, and plan to continue in 2012. However, during November & December of 2011, I really fell off the wagon in a big way. I'm probably one of the only nuts around who started exercising again during the week of Christmas, but I managed to do it. Not only does exercise fuel weight loss, but it makes me feel so much better - emotionally, mentally, and physically. I sleep so much better, and am not nearly as cranky. It's easier to get up in the morning (huge now that I have to get up at 5:15AM and commute to Pensacola every day). When exercising 4-5 days a week, I stand a little taller - am more confident in general - and feel stronger. My goal is to exercise 4 days a week in 2012.

3) Spend less money on stuff I don't need anyway. OK, y'all can stop laughing now. Let's just say this: I took a good, hard look at the 2011 spending in my Paypal account. I almost had a heart attack, and am fairly certain the DH would have a heart attack if he saw it. There is no way I would ever admit that $$$ amount online, but I will tell you - it's scary. I'm actually embarrassed by it. Seriously, how many NWT dresses does one actually need in their closet? Now I have to consider things like "Can I wear this to work" when making buying decisions. Hopefully that will help me in my goal, as this will certainly be the area that I will struggle with the most. My goal is to spend 50% less in 2012. Heaven help me.

4) Save more money. Of course this is somewhat related to resolution #3, but will actually be much easier than it sounds. With my new job, I have a new 401K with an automatic employer match of 6%. I've already signed up to contribute 6% of my base pay (as well as any additional earnings), and with the employer match = cha-ching! Note: if you have a 401K at work and are not participating, make this your year to do so. Especially for those of you still in your 20's, you won't believe how that $$ will stack up when you're barely trying. My goal for 2012 is to work my 401K contribution up to 10% of my earnings. I plan to do this in 1% increments at the start of each new calendar quarter.

Normally, my list of resolutions is much longer than just four items. But in 2012, I plan to be realistic and make smaller, attainable goals. Please wish me luck, I'm going to need all the help I can get.

Are you getting ready for the New Year's holiday weekend? I am planning a post all about my Christmas goodies, but I couldn't wait to share this story with you - I have a feeling you'll get a kick out of it!

It's well documented that I love my Lilly - and so does my sister Amy! It was rather hilarious when we opened gifts on Christmas Day - somehow, we managed to buy each other the same.exact.Lilly Pulitzer top! The silk "Elsa" style top is a staple in both mine and Amy's wardrobes - and now we both have a new one, they just happen to be exactly alike.

We're just going to have to coordinate wardrobes when we go somewhere together for a little while - so we don't show up looking like twins! Hilarious, huh?

Shopaholic Goes To...Work!

Yes, you are reading that correctly. Today I started a new (and full time!) job. I wasn't really expecting this to happen - and technically, I wasn't even "looking" for a job. But I was presented with the opportunity to go back into the mortgage business - with the largest credit union in the world. The opportunity - and benefits - are so amazing, I felt it would be foolish to turn it down.

Now, I'm sure you already know my next thought. "What am I going to wear?" The environment is "business casual" but it's a little more conservative than I thought. In all seriousness - I don't own many black, grey and navy "basic" items of clothing. I also don't own many "dress" shoes. This is going to be interesting for a few weeks!

What designer do you turn to for work basics? What does "business casual" mean to you? And more importantly: are you surprised to hear my news?

Two More Trees: Lilly Pulitzer & Football Themes

It's Christmas Eve - which seemed like a perfect time to share my Lilly Pulitzer-inspired and Football tree with you!

These are small 4' trees that were pre-lit with clear lights. Last year, I used a much smaller pink tree for the Lilly ornaments, but my collection has grown so much that I had to get a larger size. This tree is a mixture of ornaments that are either Lilly Pulitzer or "Lilly inspired" (think pink, green, preppy). Hope you enjoy the photos.

The "football tree" is a mixture of ornaments from our favorite college and NFL teams - Alabama and the Dallas Cowboys. It's the same size tree as the Lilly-inspired tree.

Tracy's designs are a favorite of preppy girls everywhere. They are easy to wear - the comfy jersey fabric is flowy, but somehow fitted just enough to be feminine. Have Pretzels? Add Rolo's & Pecans For This...

It's true - I've been experimenting a lot this holiday season. From new recipes (like the pretzel hugs I originally blogged here), to the handcrafted and jeweled holiday ornaments (original post here) - I haven't been scared to try anything! Just last week, I made these "Rolo Pretzels" so I wanted to share with you - just in case you're looking for a new treat for your next holiday gathering.

Like the pretzel hugs, this is ridiculously simple to make. Your guests, friends, family, co-workers, mail carrier - everyone will love them. All you need to purchase: Snyder's Pretzel Snaps, a bag of Rolo candies (trust me: make sure no one else is home when you get these, the DH opened mine and ate a bunch before I started making the pretzels, ha) and pecan halves. Three ingredients.

Instructions:

(1) Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

(2) Line a cookie sheet with either waxed or parchment paper.

(3) Place your pretzels in "rows" across the cookie sheet.

(4) Unwrap all the Rolo candies while your oven is preheating. Frankly, this step takes the most time of anything you'll do to prepare this "recipe".

(5) Select your best looking (and most uniform) pecan halves and set them aside.

(6) Place a Rolo candy on top of each pretzel. Bake in preheated oven for 4-5 minutes, you want the Rolo to get soft - but not melted. I baked mine for 4 minutes exactly (I use the oven timer every time I cook, as I don't trust myself to remember the exact times).

(7) Once they come out of the oven, place a pecan half on top of each candy and gently press down. Ultimately, you want the Rolo to cover the top of the pretzel.

(8) Allow your creation to cool for a few minutes, then place the cookie sheet into the refrigerator for approx. 20-30 minutes. This will allow them to set.

(9) Remove from fridge and place onto decorative plate. If you're keeping these at home, store in an airtight container. They are good for days!

If you like items that are candy cane ~~laced~~ flavored, and are lucky enough to have a Trader Joe's in your area - run, do not walk, and get yourself some Candy Cane Jo-Jo's. I have been hearing about Jo-Jo's for years, and since I don't live with a reasonable distance of Trader Joe's, I've always just missed out!

This year my sweet friend Caitlin (y'all will remember her from the guest post last week here) was kind enough to ship us four boxes of Candy Cane ~~Crack~~ Jo-Jo's. I didn't expect to love them this much. I certainly didn't expect to see the DH eating one every time I turned around. But folks - it's true. They are totally addictive, and before the holiday season is over, you simply must have a box. (Think Oreo cookie, cream filling that is not only candy cane flavored, but has pieces of candy cane. Think yummy.)

(Semi) Wordless Wednesday: Coastal Holiday Tree

It's my first time, so please be nice to me. Today I'm linking up with my friend Daphne over at Flip Flops & Pearls for (Semi) Wordless Wednesday. In addition, I am sharing the fruits of my labor - the Coastal Holiday Tree!

After countless hours spent glittering, crystallizing (is that a word?), and hot gluing for the past few days - my tree is now up and decorated. Unfortunately, I didn't have a tree topper that went with the coastal theme. My solution? Take a roll of ribbon up to the florist and have them make me a pretty bow!

As you all know from my previous crafting, I started by just making starfish - then I made a few sand dollars. After finding a huge bag of sea shells that I'd forgotten about, I decided to experiment with making some of those into ornaments. What do you think? I must apologize in advance for the photo quality (or lack thereof), I could not get the lighting right to save my life. It probably didn't help that I was taking pictures late at night either. Oops.

A Shopaholic Gets Crafty

In a move surprising to my family and close friends, I have embraced my "crafty" side. Note that I never even knew I had a crafty side...I've always been one of those people who couldn't design a room, couldn't arrange a vase of flowers, etc. Now if you asked me how to help you fund those same purchases, that I could do. I can help you write the business plan to open your design business, but I can't design my own bedroom. Go figure.

A few days ago, I decided I was going to try for a Coastal Christmas decorating theme. Of course this is a wee bit of a problem, as I don't have any coastal holiday decor. So with limited resources here at the beach (read: no Hobby Lobby, Michael's, etc locally - just Target and Wal-Mart), I had to get creative. I went to the local souvenir store and bought a bunch of starfish and sand dollars - and have started decorating them.

Glitter, Swarovski crystals, a hot glue gun - they are all my new BFF's for this project. I wanted to share some of my creations with you. Please note - they are not completed and I'm not ready to decorate just yet - but I'm working on it. Most of these will become tree ornaments - and a few might be used in a centerpiece. I'd love to hear what you think!

Hi Shopaholics! I'm Caitlin, Lori's Lilly-loving vegan bestie from Virginia. Lori is showcasing holiday recipes through the end of the year and asked me to share my famous Glazed Carrots with a Difference. These are the only glazed carrots I've ever eaten so I'm not sure what the difference the name refers to...maybe the onions? Anyhoo, they are DELICIOUS and so easy to make!

Serves 4

2 cups peeled and sliced carrots (use real carrots, not the babies, they have so much more flavor and are worth the effort)

1 medium onion diced (Did you know that if you put a piece of bread in your mouth your eyes won't tear while you chop onions?)

1/4 cup packed light brown sugar

2 tablespoons margarine,melted

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steam the carrots in a small amount of water until tender, about 8 minutes. Drain thoroughly. (I leave them in the colander for a minute or two, because if they're still pretty wet when you start mixing with the other ingredients it'll water everything down.)

In a medium saucepan, combine the carrots, onion, brown sugar, margarine and cinnamon. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes or until tender.

That's it, serve and enjoy :)

Coastal Holiday Decor: Inspiration

According to my calendar, today is December 6. In a "normal" year, my house is already decorated for the holidays. My decor usually consists of a traditional theme (think Old World Christmas style). I have spent years, and never to be admitted in public $'s collecting Christopher Radko ornaments.

To date, I have almost 200 Radkos in my collection. While they are beautiful and I love trimming the tree with such gorgeous ornaments, the process is lengthy. Each ornament is stored in it's own original box, and must be handled with care. They are removed one by one, unwrapped and hung on the tree. The Christopher Radko ornaments become very heavy when you hang that many, therefore the option of having a live tree is not advised. (After your Christmas tree falls and you lose a few beloved retired ornaments, you get smart). When decorating with the Radkos, I must use an artificial tree. And I'm ok with that - normally. But this year is a little different. I was dog sick all last week and basically lost ten days of productivity. The DH has continued to be out of town on business all the time. I am rethinking it all.

This year, I might go in a different direction. I have been inspired by coastal themed decor. The simplicity of using whites, naturals, and items found in our natural environment such as seashells, sand dollars and sea urchins. Clean lines, with a gold and silver accents for a little variation. What do you think? After all - we live at the beach. Makes sense, yes?

What is the one thing we all love and enjoy about the holiday season? Why, the traditions - of course! Whether it's going to my Nanny's house on Christmas Eve, attending a religious service, enjoying The Mobile Ballet's annual performance of "The Nutcracker" or exchanging gifts with best friends over wine and good food (sounds fun, who wants to join me?) - traditions made the holidays even more enjoyable for me.

One tradition the DH and I have: watching our favorite holiday movies. This generally starts about two weeks prior to Christmas, and we'll watch a movie every few nights until we have seen them all. One exception: we always stay up after midnight Christmas Eve and start Christmas morning by watching "A Christmas Story". You know, "you'll shoot your eye out"!

Another favorite is "It's a Wonderful Life". This one, we try to watch with my parents every year. My Father is fully convinced that his life was similar to George Bailey's - he had big dreams and wanted to leave town and home. Life had a way of readjusting his path, and as a result, he is an extremely successful businessman, but more importantly - a wonderful husband to my Mother and the best Father Amy and I could have hoped for. It truly is a wonderful life.

If you haven't seen "The Holiday", make it your mission to change that this holiday season and stat! An all star cast that includes Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Jack Black - this movie is responsible for making me feel madly in lust with Jude Law (and I wasn't a huge fan before seeing it either). Hilarious in parts, sad in others, but leaves you feeling like you just made a bunch of new friends. It's a "must see".

Don't laugh - but my "inner child" still loves "Home Alone" and "Home Alone 2: Lost In New York". Truth be known, I love the New York version most. When I see Macaulay Culkin roaming the streets of NYC, I'm actually a little jealous. And the scene where he's on top of the South Tower always makes me a little sad (this tells you we have the DVD version, all scenes of the Twin Towers were removed from television broadcasts after 9/11 out of respect for the victims and their families). Have I ever shared with you guys - one of my dreams is to wake up on Christmas morning in New York? Ideally, I would stay at The Plaza or somewhere very close to Central Park. Of course it would be snowing when I woke up and there would be presents. Lots of presents. Embrace your "inner child" this holiday season and enjoy the first two Home Alone movies, I wouldn't bother with the third though...

Because we have no children, and are pulled in a hundred different directions over the holidays, the DH and I can easily identify with Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn's characters in "Four Christmases". Every year, we threaten to run away from home for the holiday (see post about NYC above - but somewhere tropical would do just as well). In all likelihood, what happens to Reese and Vince is probably what would happen if we also ran away. Hilarious...

Another oldie but goodie, "Miracle on 34th Street" is admittedly not the DH's favorite, but I can usually talk him into watching. This movie always renews my faith in humanity, reminds me to dream and gives me a warm feeling for the holiday season. I didn't get to watch it last year, so my memories of this one are a little faded. I'm looking forward to seeing it again!

Imagine this - Sarah Jessica Parker is a fairly conservative (dare we say, she is portrayed in a Republican-like manner?) in one of my newer favorite holiday movies, "The Family Stone". When her fiancee' (Dermot Mulroney) takes her home to Connecticut to meet his family over the holidays, she is not very well received by the "liberal and rambunctious" crew. SJP is a true star in this film (especially since we all know she is NOT a Republican, ha!). Other cast members include Diane Keaton, Craig T. Nelson, Luke Wilson, Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams, etc. Won't say too much about how it ends in case you haven't seen it, but this film is definitely worth a few hours of your time.

The holiday movie list just isn't complete without mentioning "Christmas Vacation". The Griswolds, holiday lights, light sockets, bonus checks, a drunk brother in law on your property in an RV. It's all here, and it's hilarious. One of our all time favorites. If this doesn't make you laugh for almost two hours, I'm not sure anything will! (See image at top of post for the movie). Chevy Chase makes me laugh by just looking AT him during this film, he doesn't even have to utter a word.

I think it's time to get the popcorn ready - what about you? Can't wait for DH to get home so we can cue up the holiday movies!

Pretzel Hugs: An Easy Holiday Treat

If you're looking for a super easy, sweet and salty treat to make this holiday season, keep reading. Whether making these for your child's holiday party at school, an informal gathering at your BFF's house, or as a special gift for your UPS driver or mail carrier - everyone will love these. Meet the "Pretzel Hug". I have seen these referred to by many other names online, but I'll just go with Pretzel Hug. It's easy for me to remember!

The ingredient list is simple: Hershey's Kisses (1 or 2 bags, depending on how many you'd like to make) and Snyder's Pretzel Snaps. You'll also need a cookie sheet and waxed or parchment paper to line the pan.

Directions: (so easy, a child could do this)

(1) Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F.

(2) Unwrap the Hershey's Kisses. I used the Candy Cane ones, I've seen other recipes call for the Hugs. I'm sure they would be great, no matter which version of the Kisses you decide to use. (Personally, I thought the Candy Cane ones would be pretty for the holidays).

(3) Line baking sheet with waxed or parchment paper. If you don't have either, use a non stick baking sheet.

(4) Place pretzels in a straight line across baking sheet. Top each pretzel with a Hershey's Kiss. (Note in second picture below, I took the picture after I started topping the pretzels when they came out of the oven. Oops. My mistake, but this gives you an idea of what the pretzels should look like right before they go into the oven, just ignore that top right side!)

(5) After you've topped each pretzel with a Kiss (Hug, Candy Cane, whatever!) - pop into the oven for 2 minutes. Be careful not to over bake as they will "bleed" through the back side of the pretzel. Two minutes is more than enough. The top of the Kiss should be slightly melted once they're removed from the oven.

(6) Let stand for approx. 1 minute on top of stove, this will continue the softening process without the full heat.

(7) Top each Kiss with another pretzel, being sure to push down gently, this will "stick" them together. They should now look like this:

(8) Place baking sheet in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes (not in the freezer - they will get as hard as hockey pucks if you do!). This allows the pretzels to cool and set up. Trust me, you will want to try one almost immediately!

(9) Once they are cooled, place on a decorative tray and enjoy! If you'd like to gift these, you could easily place in a clear plastic bag and tie with a holiday ribbon. The gift version would look even better if you have a personalized gift tag.

If you are wondering about my platter, it's from the Southern Living At Home line and is called the "Dress Me Up" glass platter. I believe SLAH was purchased by Willow House - does anyone know? Not sure, one of my friends used to be a consultant but retired from the business after going back to work full time.

I used a holiday ribbon in colors of red and green to "dress up" the platter. I was rather disappointed that some of my other ribbons weren't quite long enough for the project...

More information about the recipe: I used only 1 bag of Candy Cane Kisses and approx. a half bag of pretzels, and that yielded 60 Pretzel Hugs. If you are making this to take to a party, school function or to gift, I recommend using at least two bags of Kisses. (You should have enough pretzels by only using the one pound bag). I've also heard of people using Rolo candies and topping with a half of a pecan instead of another pretzel. Yeah, I'll probably try that this holiday season. If I do, I'll share with you!

My New Favorite Lilly Pulitzer Tunic: Meet Joycee, Resort 2011-2012

Have you been salivating over the Lilly Pulitzer Resort collection? Naturally I have since it came out, and am working on adding "wish list" items to my existing Lilly Pulitzer ~~obsession~~ collection.

I always look forward to new Lilly Pulitzer tunic styles, and in this recent collection, they did not disappoint! Thankfully, my friends at Lilly included previous favorite styles such as the Ciara and the Thandie. They were also kind enough to add a newbie to the lineup: the Joycee!

The Joycee is made of a cotton slub jersey material, has full length sleeves but it surprisingly lightweight. The neckline reminds me of my favorite top (Elsa!) with a mandarin collar and v-notch front. And an added bonus: the sleeves have an elastic cuff! It retails for only $98 and is currently available in three prints.

Turquoise Jungle Glam Toile version is pictured above and is already one of my favorites prints of the season. Joycee also comes in Shorely Blue Toucan Tango. Don't you love it too?

And finally, in the Hotty Pink Scorpion Bowl.

A note regarding fit: I am finding this tunic to fit true-to-size and maybe a "touch" large. Of course a tunic is something you will prefer wearing a little bit loose, so I suggest going with your "normal" size. These come in XS, S, M, L and XL - just an FYI.

Which print(s) are your favorite? I've already purchased the Toile and Toucan print, and have recently ordered the Scorpion Bowl. I really thought I was safe, then I saw another version coming up in the 12/25 resort delivery. Yeah, I might need it too..this one is Bright Navy Reef Me Up. My defense: I get a lot of wear from my Lilly tunics. They're just easy for a casual lifestyle here at the beach, and seem to work in our sub-tropical climate year round. Sounds good, doesn't it? :-)

Happy Sunday! Today I'm busy getting the DH ready to go out of town again tomorrow. It's been a wonderful holiday week and weekend, especially with him at home. Hope yours has been fantastic as well.

Happy weekend! With the holiday shopping season upon us, there is one way we can all make a difference this year. Pledge to "Shop Small" today, and celebrate Small Business Saturday.

November 26 is the second anniversary of this event, which was specifically created by American Express to celebrate small business in our local communities and invigorate local economies. Personally, I believe any opportunity to support small, locally owned business is a great thing - and that is even better (in my opinion, of course) when the business is female owned.

Can I be honest? I'm not really a big "Black Friday" shopper. While I love nothing more than a great sale and a wonderful deal, I do not enjoy shopping in huge crowds and watching folks fight over flat screen televisions. I much prefer to do most of my shopping online or via phone order.

New Bakeware: It's Pink and It Was Free!

Just in time for the holiday baking season, I received this new set of bake ware and cooking supplies. Everything in the set is pink (or has pink accents). Maybe best of all - the entire set was free! You just can't beat that, right?

Many of you will remember from prior posts that I love to coupon - and while I'm not an "Extreme Couponer" - I do manage to consistently save 50-70% on my groceries, toothpaste, paper goods, etc. Unlike the folks on shows like TLC's "Extreme Couponing" - I don't purchase dozens of anything. If something is on a fantastic sale and I have coupons that make it free (or close), I will get maybe four items. In addition, I always donate items to charity or a local family in need.

One of the things I enjoy about couponing is sending off for mail in rebates, and free gifts. To celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness in October, Procter & Gamble offered the free bake ware set pictured above with a $25 purchase of P&G products. You best believe, I picked up my P&G goodies and mailed off for my goodies!

I had actually forgotten about mailing in for the offer, and then an unidentified box arrived on Monday! Included in the set: measuring cups, mixing bowls, silicone baking sheet, a cookie sheet, oven glove and spatula. What a nice surprise, huh?

Pink - very appropriate, don't you think? :-) Now the question is - what should I bake?

For Your Thanksgiving Feast: Sweet Potato Souffle

Are you busy planning your family's Thanksgiving meal? With just a few short days until the annual celebration, I am making grocery lists and running back and forth to Publix. (You could say they know me there...)

If your family is like mine, we all have dishes that we prepare to bring to the celebration. Once you make a great dish that everyone loves, then you are expected to bring that same dish every year. Today I'm going to share a recipe that I prepare every year for my family's Thanksgiving meal. Mine for Thanksgiving is Sweet Potato Souffle. Please let me apologize in advance that I don't have a photo of this dish to share with you guys - but I didn't want to make this until the day before Thanksgiving. :-)

Sweet Potato Souffle

Ingredients:

(3) Large sweet potatoes, roasted and whipped
(1) Cup Sugar (I only use 1/2 cup but recipes calls for a full cup. Personally I think a full cup would be way too sweet!)
(2) Eggs, Beaten
1/2 tsp. Salt
(1) Stick of Butter
1/2 Cup Evaporated Milk
(2) tsp. Vanilla
(1) Jar of Marshmallow Cream
1/2 Cup Chopped Pecans

Directions:

Roast potatoes at 375 degrees for 60-90 minutes. Peel off skins and mash. Add sugar, eggs, salt, butter, milk and vanilla and whip together with hand mixer. Put in a greased 1.5 quart casserole dish. Bake in a 325 degree oven for 25 minutes. Then remove from oven, place marshmallow cream and pecan on top. Return to oven for 5 minutes or until brown on top.

Your family and friends will absolutely love this dish! It's a little like a "side dish" but in my opinion, it really qualifies as a dessert. The souffle is sweet and a great compliment to any meat you might serve - turkey, ham, roast, etc.

What's Your Tervis Personality?

Give me a Tervis Tumbler, and I'm one happy girl. When I find a Tervis that perfectly matches my personality, I'm even happier.

I have quite the collection of Tervis Tumblers and use one every.single.day of my life. From that one cup of coffee first thing in the morning to my Diet Coke, water and Crystal Light throughout the day - they're all in a Tervis. Since I've recently discovered the matching lids available for purchase, now I'm confident using the Tervis when traveling in the car. With a lid and a straw, I'm not worried about hitting a bump and spilling (or wearing!) my drink.

Some of the favorite Tervis Tumblers in our collection include the following:

Lilly Pulitzer Tervis, Blue Seahorses. These were produced three or four years ago and are no longer available. They are treasured pieces of my collection - so treasured in fact, they are housed on the wet bar and not in the kitchen!

Save The Gulf Tervis. My parents gave me this cup during the summer of the BP oil spill. I don't ever use it without thinking about the spill and what it meant - and continues to mean - to this area.

Alabama Tervis, no explanation necessary. Affectionally known around here as "Gameday" cups, there is no telling what beverage you might find in one of these Tervis. The day might start with a mimosa or bloody mary, and end with a nice cold beer. When the weather is warm, a pina colada or miami vice is always a suspect!

Shopaholic Tervis, this one comes with a great story. Last week, my friend Margaret over at 2Preppygirls emailed to ask me for my address and said she had a little something to send me that I "needed". A few days later, this Tervis arrived. How sweet of Margaret! I was honored that she thought about me, and I absolutely love my new cup! And isn't it "me"?!!?

Flips Flops and Crab Tervis, with matching lids. These are most commonly used in my car (again no desire to wear my drink!). I love the 24 oz. size and they are big enough to last for that hour plus drive to my parent's house!

Santa Tervis. Surprisingly, I only have one "holiday-themed" Tervis, it was in my stocking a few years ago. How cool is Santa in his hammock between the palm trees?

Lilly Pulitzer Tervis, more blue seahorses. These are the same as the ones in the first photo, but a larger size.

More Lilly Pulitzer Tervis, in a pink hanging monkey design. I had two of these, but I can only find one of them. I suspect that one of my friends has made off with one of my Lilly tervis. If they confess their sin, and return it promptly, no one has to get hurt. I won't even call the police! HA! Like I said before, Lilly Pulitzer hasn't produced these cups in several years and all indications are they probably won't again. I will be devastated if one of the pink monkeys is "permanently lost". :-(

My Shopaholic Skin System

Do you have a specific nighttime skincare regime or system? It's almost a big joke here, when I tell the DH I have to "get ready for bed" - that means I'll be in front of the mirror for at least fifteen minutes before retiring for the evening. And all because of my nightly regime!

I like to think that I have pretty decent skin and a fairly nice complexion, but it comes with an investment of my time and a little money. I've always been one of those girls who took care of her skin. Heck, I lay out in the sun for eight months out of the year - I know I must do this! :)

Even when I was a teenager and in my early 20's, I didn't go to bed with makeup on my face or eyes. I can clearly recall the day my Mother took me to the Clinique counter and I was introduced to the 3-step system, some of which I still use today. Over the years, my skin's needs have changed and the products have changed as a result.

Just for fun, here are the products that I use religiously every night. These are listed in the order I use them.

#1 - Clarisonic Classic & Clinique Rinse-Off Foaming Cleanser: Apply a nickel-size amount of cleanser on the Clarisonic, then dampen it with a shot of water. I have my Clarisonic set for a full two minutes of cleansing. I use this all over my face and for a few seconds on my neck.

#2 - Clinique Liquid Facial Soap in Mild: Another step with the Clarisonic Classic. Approximately a nickel size amount of liquid soap on the Clarisonic brush, and another full two minutes of cleansing. Also on my face and a few seconds on my neck.

#3 - Clinique Clarifying Lotion 2: I apply this toner to a cotton ball and swipe it over my face and neck. The toner makes my skin feel "tight" and removes any leftover cleanser/soap residue or makeup that might have been missed.

#4 - Clinique Take The Day Off: With a cotton ball for each eye, I use this product as eye makeup remover. After dousing the cotton ball, I will let it "rest" on my closed eye for a full 10-15 seconds before sweeping away the makeup. This is a very important step because you're not "pulling" at your eyes - which causes wrinkling. I don't like wrinkles.

#5 - Clinique All About Eyes: I've tried numerous eye creams - high end, mid range and cheap. For my eyes, this works the best of anything I've ever tried. The cream helps not only with wrinkles, but is also a de-puffer and has a silky, creamy consistency. If Clinique ever discontinues this product, I have no idea what I'll do. Other than start my own "Occupy Clinique" at their headquarters. :-)

#6 - Latisse: Yep, I'm using Latisse. I've been using this for about seven weeks, and yes, it works. My lashes are much longer and much fuller. I only use it once a day, and have not experienced any side effects. I haven't decided if I will continue to use this - the DH thinks my lashes are getting too long. We'll see...

#7 - Borba Firming Neck and Decollete Cream: In recent years, I've really noticed that the skin on my neck is aging differently (read: looks way worse) than the skin on my face. This is an extremely rich cream that I use every night on my neck and decollete. I will say this - even when I wake up in the morning, my neck still feels moisturized.

#8 - Clayton Shagal Collagen Gel Plus: Purchased from my esthetician, this is a 10% collagen gel to help with lines and wrinkles. Since I'm not ready to start getting Botox or filler injections, I decided to invest in this product. Every time I get a facial, Angie uses this on my skin. For days after, it would feel and look great - even when I had on minimal makeup. That was enough to "sell me"!

#9 - Philosophy Hope In A Jar Moisturizer: Facial moisturizer, I apply this product after the collagen gel is completely dry. My skin feels fantastic after using the HIAJ, and I've been using for several years.

#10 - Kiehl's Lip Balm No. 1 in Mango: Think petroleum jelly, with a mango scent. This keeps my lips moisturized and soft, but isn't sticky. A tube lasts forever! It also comes in other scents such as coconut, cranberry, mint, etc. I love them all!

So - that's it! A few things I have learned - through trial and error...

*Even if something is expensive, that doesn't mean it will work better.
*When working within a budget, it is best to purchase the best moisturizers, eye creams, etc that you can afford.
*When purchasing cleansing, toning and eye makeup remover products - sometimes the cheaper stuff works just as well. Save your $ for the treatment products (see above point).
*Though it was pricey, the Clarisonic was the best investment I've ever made in my skin. My pores are less visible and I know my products are working much better, because they can actually reach the layers of my skin.
*It's never too early - or too late - to take care of your skin. If you're young, develop good habits now. It's only a few minutes out of your day (or night!) and it's worth it. If you're like me and "of a certain age", it's not too late to start. Skin care is such a science now - I'm constantly amazed at what the right products can correct.

All this being said, I am looking for a more potent anti-aging regime. I'll let you know what I decide to try!

What is your nighttime process? I can't believe mine is TEN steps. Yikes, no wonder it takes so long to get ready for bed!

p.s. I'm still amazed by people that sleep in their makeup. Don't they feel like their face is dirty? And don't get me started on sleeping in eye makeup...yuck! The only "Smoky eyes" I want are the ones I applied today! :-)

Endless Summer? I Wish!

It's a dreary day on the Alabama Gulf Coast. It's raining outside, and the sky is a weird shade of gray-black. We're under a tornado warning. This weather is making me seriously wish for the bright and sunny days of summer!

Endless Summer, anyone? I wish! Until then, I will have to settle for the beach towel I found on One Kings Lane this morning. I found it hiding in the "Artist Editions - Beach Towels" boutique. Gorgeous in the teal color pictured above, it's also available in orange and navy.

Only One More Of These Left in 2011...

Do you ever have a moment when you look at the calendar and think "wow" it's almost time for ______ (fill in the blank - important event, holiday, the end of something you really enjoy, etc)?

Yesterday, I had that "aha" moment when I realized there is only one Alabama home football game left in Tuscaloosa this season. Every year, I am so thankful that I have the opportunity to be a season ticket holder and attend the home games on Saturdays. It certainly makes football season a lot of fun (even if I'm often very tired on Sunday).

Part of what I enjoy about the games is spending time with my family and friends. In the above photo, I am with my Father at the Alabama vs. Tennessee game in October. My sister also attended the Tennessee game with us and we had a wonderful time.

What do you think of my Father's Alabama "Hawaiian" shirt? Believe me, everyone in Tuscaloosa asks him about these shirts. I think he has four or five of them, all in different colors, patterns, etc. Most of the shirts are made by Reyn Spooner and are getting very difficult to find. It's actually time for a few replacements and my Mother has been scouring the internet in hopes that she can surprise him at Christmas!

Speaking of my Mother, she attended the Alabama vs. LSU game with us week before last. While I won't discuss the end result of the game (ugh - I wasn't happy about that), I will say we had a great day. The energy in town, in the stadium and while tailgating prior the game was absolutely electric. We met so many nice LSU fans and while the rivalry was quite "heated" to say the least, it was respectful.

My mother in law is also a season ticket holder - not sure if you guys have ever seen her around these parts!

Here's one thing I really need to give up - the cookies from Pollman's Bakery in Mobile. I always pick these up on Friday before the Alabama home games. These are soooo delicious, but on the diet they are not...

There are only two more regular season Alabama games - Ga. Southern this Saturday in Tuscaloosa and Auburn next week in Auburn. Then it's on to the bowl game season and who knows where that could lead. There's a very, very slight possibility that Alabama and LSU could meet again in the BCS national championship game. Lots of stuff has to happen first - a few other teams would have to lose games, Alabama and LSU have to win their remaining games and there is no telling what else.

IF that matchup happens - the BCS national championship game is being played in New Orleans at the Superdome. Can you say "complete and total craziness"?!? The roof might come off the dome...

Last week, I was excited to find it in our local state-owned liquor store. I bought some to try, and tested it over the weekend. It's a little tart, but I happen to like that. I plan to purchase another bottle for our last home game in Tuscaloosa next weekend...

I want to thank my Niece, Lori Driver, for asking me to share a few thoughts about my experiences and what Veterans Day means for this retired military man.

Veterans Day to me is one of the most significant and memorable days of the year. It causes me to pause and reflect on my own service time, my buddies whom I miss all the time, my family's collection of Veterans, and thanking all those who have ever served to protect this country. Veterans Day this year is even more significant when we have young men and women on the line fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan and other remote regions of the world. An entire new generation of Veterans is coming up through the hard fought wages of war. Veterans Day to them will mean as much if not more than it does to us... for their world, their time, their wars are truly global in nature. God bless them all.

I proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1962 – 1983 & would gladly and proudly do it all again if I had the opportunity. The best things in my life happened during my time in the military: I met and married my wonderful wife, Monika, who hails from Germany. She presented us with our two sons who both went on to serve in the Navy and Air Force respectively. Now we have four terrific grandsons who are the apple of our eyes. The education, discipline, training & learning to be part of a team all were keys to my post-military career. To this day our closest friends tend to be people we met in the military. The military is not just a job; it is also about building lifelong friendships from a tightly knit community who are prepared to die for their country.

Our various tours of duty took me & the family to Europe twice & a number of different locations in the USA, including a one year tour in Korea that did not include the family. The real hero in keeping the family together & stable during my numerous deployments for weeks & months at a time was Monika, my wife of 46 years.

Sharing my feelings about Veteran's Day is not an easy thing for me to do. The treatment of our troops who fought in Vietnam by people in this country remains a bitter memory that I will never get over. Throughout our history veterans have been called upon by their country to go to war. They place themselves in harm's way, fight battles under extremely difficult circumstances, face the possibility that they might never see their loved ones again or may return severely injured and not enjoy life as before. In some cases, they become prisoners for years. They see horrendous violence and experience death and injuries to their fellow soldiers and close friends. They today suffer a panoramic blur of memories rushing through their minds. It never totally goes away. They seldom talk about it.

Veterans have fought in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf War and several smaller ones. These are good people who have left their homes and their loved ones to fight for America. Some of them did not come home. They lost their lives for their country.

A veteran can say: "I have seen the worst of combat and unlike many of my comrades, I survived." "I miss those who gave their all with me in combat. I think of them often." "I am glad I had the opportunity to pay back to America for all the freedoms and privileges I have. I don't take them for granted." "I fought for your right to disagree with what I personally believe. And I continue to think it was and is the right thing to do. It is a tradition handed down from our founding fathers that must continue if America is to achieve their vision."

And yet, I realize that in these times of accelerated living, most people neither want to take the time to reflect nor understand what it is to be a veteran. Even more important is to understand what America might be like if there had not been veterans who went into combat for their country. Many of them laid it all on the line for us. We owe these veterans more than we can ever repay.

As you know, all across America we celebrate our veterans both those living and dead for what they gave to all of us. Without them, America would not be what it is today. I am proud to be a veteran - not because I want people to thank us, but because I, like all my fellow veterans, am glad I had an opportunity to pay back to America for all the freedoms and privileges that we enjoy today. This is the day that I give special thanks and remember my fellow veterans.

You see, war is not something that anyone wants. After each war we hope that there will never be another one, but people, and countries, cannot get along. My hope is that no American will ever have to go to war again. But, if it is necessary, I hope there will be Americans there to serve their country proudly.

Speaking only for myself, I appreciate our country's respect and formality in honoring our veterans and military, but don't care much for being made an example of someone who should be honored. I prefer instead to demonstrate my own admiration for my country and fellow veterans.

Monogram Mess

Recently, I attended a show for a friend who started selling Thirty-One. For those not familiar, they specialize in totes, carry-all bags, etc. Most of the items can be monogrammed and of course I want everything I purchase to be monogrammed!

My Mother and BFF Priscilla also attended the party. Priscilla and I ordered the exact same bag - only in different prints. We ordered the exact same monogram style, font and thread color.

The bags arrived over the weekend, and I was so disappointed in mine! Take a look at it above - you need a magnifying glass to find my monogram! Ugh.

Now - here is Priscilla's bag - isn't it pretty?

Have no fear - I contacted the consultant and she has already ordered a replacement bag for me. Thank goodness!

I am looking forward to receiving my bag, with a 3.5" monogram - of course!
